Digital version of the split album released in June 2022 by Polytechnic Youth
Side G collects three Gabe Knox rarities on one slab of wax. “Student Disco ‘81”, previously only available on a limited Record Store Day 7”, is a sickly-sweet Krautrock-inflected synthpop confection, with just enough bite to fill the dancefloors of a bygone era. The other two cuts, fan-favourite “Carbon Bubble” and the ultra-rare “Cosmic Debris”, showcase Knox’s more expansive, experimental-but-still-melodic side, made available for the first time on vinyl.
Side P: The Pulsliebhaber project was an exercise in super fast recording with as little computer use as possible (for sequencing or processing). First takes were used just about every time. Each of the seven tracks on side P were written and recorded in a single session with not one of them taking more than a couple of hours to finish, most of them significantly less than 60 minutes. The original intention was to record a bunch of demos and revisit them later, but after sending them to Dom it was agreed to release them as they are with just a little sheen provided by Jez Butler’s mastering.

This is very close to what I heard/felt everytime we visited the grandparents in Runcorn. Ominous dread. Bleak dystopia. Concrete and terraced houses. Plus the air smells!

Great record. wears it's influences proudly ..but retains a sliver of identity that is uniquely British and has a northern feel to it..I think that these geographic musical vignettes are realy evocotive of northern Newtown Uber estates and satellite communities..I hope this translates to a wider audience for him...he deserves the attention. give him his due .NOW .

Building a New Town

Here we have a bit of instrumental folktronica, the brainchild of Gordon Chapman-Fox. Various keyboards mix with crisp acoustic guitar, creating a semblance of wistful nostalgia. The music is delicate and languid, sometimes bordering on supernatural. My only complaint is that it’s an EP, I could stand a lot more of this in one sitting.
