about

Written specifically for a DEF compilation, this is my take on seasonal songwriting.

Based on the ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia where slaves were treated as equals for one day a year, with wine, food, gifts and clothing bestowed on them by their owners in order to keep them submissive and compliant for the other 364 days of the year. This is a trick that is still used by those in power to keep us, the unwashed hoards in our place.

lyrics

And we shall roll the dice of fortune
on meat and fruit shall we feast
And the forces of labour shall serve us
and clothe us in silk from the east

Io Saturnalia

As the goat sails though the night sea
and thoughts of our plight are forgot
Our pleasure soon wanes with the moon
as Macrobius writes of our lot

Io Saturnalia

Yet today we shall drink of the vine
with Bacchus and Saturn we are one
For tomorrow shall we be enslaved
under the gaze of the unconquered sun
